Kansas City

Kansas City straddles the border between Missouri and Kansas and is known for barbecue, jazz and football. The queer scene is manageable and locally rooted, with bars that in some cases have been around for decades.

The scene

Most of the bars are in Midtown: on Broadway Boulevard, Woody’s KC and Hamburger Mary’s stand side by side, on 39th Street there is the drag bar Missie B’s, and on Main Street the country bar Side Kicks Saloon. Bistro 303 in Westport is the quieter spot for cocktails and brunch.

When to go?

  • Football season (autumn and winter): Chiefs games with a queer crowd at Woody’s KC
  • Monthly all year round: Bear Bust (1st Saturday), LIPS for women (2nd Friday) and UNDERDOGS (4th Saturday) at Woody’s KC
