What makes Kaiser stand out
Ni-chōme has hundreds of small bars, often with just a counter for a few guests and a host, the mama-san. Many of them are geared to Japanese regulars. Kaiser is different: the team speaks English, Chinese and Korean, and even first-time visitors quickly become part of the group.
As is usual in many snack bars, there’s a seating charge. In return you get conversation and company at the counter. Guests particularly rave about host Hiroya.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is international and mainly Asian, with many from China, Korea and Taiwan. Guests report that they quickly felt at home, even when they came alone. The bar opens late and runs until the early hours.
A good fit if you …
- want to experience snack bar culture without a language barrier
- are out on your own
- like long nights
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a big bar
- want to dance
