What makes The Beat special
The Beat opened on Ann Street on 12 November 1983 and has seen itself ever since as a safe space for the LGBTIQ+ community in the Fortitude Valley nightlife district. The club spreads over several levels with six dance floors and several bars. Musically it ranges from retro, RnB and hip-hop to EDM and pop.
In September 2026 a Sydney developer bought the site, with a residential tower planned. The club remains a tenant for now; no end date is known.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mixed, queer and straight, and rather young. It is busiest on Fridays and Saturdays after midnight, when the bars in the Valley close. If you want to switch between retro, hip-hop and pop, there is a floor for every mood.
A good fit if you …
- want one last proper dance at the end of the night
- like drag shows and pop music
- want to experience a piece of Brisbane club history
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a gay-only club
- want to go out on a Monday or Tuesday
