Hamburg has two faces – and both are worth your time. Behind the main station lies St. Georg with the Lange Reihe, the centre of the gay scene for decades. On the other side of the city centre, St. Pauli tempts with the Reeperbahn, Kiez pubs and a tradition of drag.
The neighbourhoods
St. Georg and the Lange Reihe. Colourful, multicultural and just a few steps from the main station. Along the Lange Reihe and in the side streets around Hansaplatz there are bars for every taste: the M&V Bar, said to have been on the Lange Reihe since 1953, cosy cellar bars such as Extratour and, in Toms (formerly Toms Saloon), Hamburg’s leather legend dating from 1974. During the day cafés with a view of the hustle and bustle beckon, and in the evening the bars fill up.
St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn. Here the nightlife is louder and more mixed. WunderBar on Talstraße has been the scene’s Kiez disco since 1991, and Toom Peerstall is one of the oldest gay bars in the city. Drag has a long tradition in the Kiez: Pulverfass Cabaret has been around since 1973, and on Große Freiheit Olivia Jones runs her own bar.
When to go?
- Summer – Hamburg Pride: First Pride Week, then the parade from St. Georg to the Jungfernstieg with around 100,000 people. Recently, CSD has mostly taken place in early August.
- All year round: Drag shows in the Kiez, karaoke and DJ nights in St. Georg – current dates are listed below.
Our favourites
- For the first drink: the M&V Bar on the Lange Reihe.
- For dancing: WunderBar near the Reeperbahn – until 6am at weekends.
- For history: Toms (formerly Toms Saloon), with drawings by Tom of Finland on the walls.
