Brazil is a country of contrasts: it celebrates the world’s biggest Pride parades and at the same time has one of the highest rates of anti-queer violence. In the big cities of Rio and São Paulo the scene is large, visible and full of life; in rural regions discretion is advisable.
Legal situation: Same-sex marriage has been possible nationwide since 2013, and since 2019 the Supreme Court has treated homophobia and transphobia as criminal offences on a par with racism. Legal gender can be changed without surgery; however, individual legislative initiatives at municipal and state level try to restrict queer topics, for example in schools.
