Cologne is perhaps the most sociable gay city in Germany. Nobody stays a stranger for long here: you stand in the street with a Kölsch in hand, sing along to Schlager and Cologne hits and quickly make friends. Add to that one of the biggest Prides in Europe and a carnival in which the scene celebrates right at the front.
The city’s two scenes
Around Rudolfplatz and Schaafenstraße. The so-called Bermuda Triangle between Schaafenstraße and Mauritiuswall is the heart of Cologne’s nightlife. ExCorner, Die Mumu, Iron and Exile sit side by side here; the bars open in the early evening and often don’t close until it’s getting light outside. At Mumu, Exile and Nachteule the crowd is young and mixed, while ExCorner and Schampanja tend to attract men over 40; at weekends the street turns into one big party.
Altstadt, Heumarkt and Mathiasstraße. The older part of the scene lies between Heumarkt, Pipinstraße and Mathiasstraße. Things are more traditional here: small pubs with regulars, drag shows and a crowd that is a little older on average. Zur Kaiserin, Amadeus, Barcelon and Baustelle 4U are right next to one another, and a few steps further on come the bear bar The 3B, My Lord and the cruising bars Deck 5 and Pullermanns.
When to go?
- Carnival (February/March): The city turns upside down, and the queer bars join in. Fancy dress is a must.
- ColognePride (June/July): Weeks of events, a street festival in the Altstadt and the CSD parade across the Deutz Bridge. In 2026 ColognePride ran from 19 June to 5 July.
- All year round: Drag bingo, karaoke and parties in the Bermuda Triangle. Current dates are listed below.
Our favourites
- For a sing-along: ExCorner with Cologne Schlager, cheap Kölsch and a crowd mostly over 40.
- For a bar with character: Schampanja on Mauritiuswall, open almost every evening since 1985.
- For a mixed crowd: Die Mumu, the pink party bar with karaoke on Tuesdays.

Practical tips
- The easiest way to reach the Bermuda Triangle is via Rudolfplatz station.
- At weekends there’s a central cloakroom on Schaafenstraße for the surrounding bars – handy in winter.
- Kölsch comes in small glasses and is topped up automatically until you place a beer mat on your glass.
