What makes the Eagle special
The story begins in 1931 with a dockworkers’ pub on 11th Avenue. In 1970 Jack Modica took it over and turned it into a leather and Levi’s bar that became the model for almost 50 Eagle bars worldwide. After closing at the old location in 2000, the Eagle reopened in October 2001 on West 28th Street, in a two-storey building that was a horse stable in the late 19th century. The roof deck was added in 2002.
Across the two floors there are several bars and a pool table, and upstairs is the roof deck, open until 4 am in good weather. There is a theme night almost every night. Every year the Eagle sends its Mr. Eagle to International Mr. Leather in Chicago.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is made up of leather guys, bears, gear fans and men who like dress-code parties, from New York and around the world. It usually only fills up after midnight; on Sundays the evening starts with the Beer Blast at 5 pm. The roof deck, the atmosphere and the parties get praise.
A good fit if you …
- like leather, gear or jockstrap parties
- want to party on a roof deck in summer
- are looking for a men-only bar
Not ideal if you …
- want to go out before 10 pm (except Sundays)
- are looking for a mixed bar for everyone
