What makes Henrietta Hudson special
When the legendary lesbian bar Cubby Hole closed in 1990, former bartender Lisa Cannistraci and Minnie Rivera turned the space into Henrietta Hudson. Of the dozens of lesbian bars that once existed in the US, only a few remain; Henrietta Hudson is one of the best known and a firm part of West Village history.
In 2021 the bar was remodelled: instead of a cramped club, there is now an atmospheric mid-century-style room with armchairs, booths, a corner for community nights and a parklet outside in summer. It serves wine, including from women winemakers and BIPOC wineries, cocktails and cheese and charcuterie boards. During the week things are more relaxed with quizzes, live music and TV nights; at weekends DJs play and people dance.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mainly lesbian and queer women, trans and non-binary people and their friends. At weekends it gets really full. The DJs and the welcoming atmosphere get praise.
A good fit if you …
- want to experience one of the last classic lesbian bars
- want to dance at the weekend
- are out in the West Village
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a men’s bar
- want to go out on a Monday or Tuesday
