What makes the Badehaus at Deutsche Eiche special
Deutsche Eiche, a few steps from the Viktualienmarkt, is a historic meeting place for artists and the scene, today a complex of a three-star superior hotel, a restaurant with Bavarian cuisine and a bathhouse. The sauna spreads over several levels: one of the largest steam rooms in the city, a whirlpool at 37 degrees, a Finnish sauna at 90 and a milder one at 80 degrees, a rest area and a roof garden. Cabins cost €10 to €30 extra, and entry includes a towel, locker and five hours’ stay. It’s cheaper with the early bird rate (Mon–Thu, entry 12–4 pm) or the late-night rate (Sun–Thu from 9 pm), each €22.50.
Guests praise the cleanliness, facilities and relaxed atmosphere, and the crowd mixes hotel guests, travellers and Munich regulars; it gets noticeably fuller in the evening. According to the website, the building’s roof terrace is currently closed.
A good fit if you …
- want to combine hotel, food and sauna in one place
- want to sweat non-stop at night or at the weekend
- are under 30 and can use the discount
Not ideal if you …
- want to sleep quietly in a cabin
- are looking for a pure wellness atmosphere without cruising
- don’t cope well with crowds at peak times
