What makes Centralhjørnet stand out

Centralhjørnet is on a small side street between City Hall Square and Strøget. The bar describes itself as the oldest surviving gay bar in the world: men were already meeting here in 1917, long before homosexuality was decriminalised in Denmark in 1933. Today it explicitly also sees itself as “straight friendly”.

The room is small, with wood, pictures and a long bar. Besides beer, the menu features wines by the glass, cava, champagne, port, cocktails and shots. Every year during Pride week there’s a street party outside the door.

Atmosphere and crowd

By day regulars sit here over a beer; in the evening it gets busier and louder. The crowd is a colourful mix: regulars from the neighbourhood, older gentlemen and tourists who want to experience the bar’s history. In summer there are seats outside in the lane.
