What makes Kalff stand out
Café Kalff sits on the Oudegracht in the heart of Utrecht’s old town, on the historic site of the former disco De Roze Wolk. It has been a fixture of the queer scene since 2011. Inside it is narrow and cramped, with stained-glass windows, leather seats, pink cushions, portraits of the royal family and a mini dance floor. By day you can sit outside on the small terrace.
The bar’s motto: “Go where you’re celebrated, not where you’re tolerated!” During the week it is quiet enough for a drink and a chat, at weekends the party goes on into the early hours. There are dedicated parties for Pride Utrecht, King’s Day and the Eurovision final.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mixed, gay men, lesbians and friends between their mid-20s and 50, plus a small drag scene. Google reviews praise the family atmosphere and the warm team.
A good fit if you …
- like a small, sociable pub
- want pre-drinks on the canal
- love Eurovision and pop
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for lots of space
- expect a big club
