What makes Candy Darling stand out
The bar is named after trans icon and Warhol muse Candy Darling and sees itself as a place for queer culture and activism. Behind the inconspicuous entrance, a narrow white corridor leads into a surprisingly large room with a stage, sofa corner, bar and a small dance floor, the Wild Room. Murals and installations of queer art define the decor, and it serves its own house cocktails and small dishes such as the “Bikini Darling” toasties.
The programme is broad: DJ sets, live music, drag, burlesque, readings, talks, bingo, stand-up and pop-up markets. The bar announces what’s on each night on Instagram.
Atmosphere and crowd
Candy Darling deliberately sets a counterpoint to the more male-dominated scene of the Gaixample. The crowd is colourful, open and creative. Its Google reviews are among the best in the city, praising the atmosphere, cocktails and team.
A good fit if you …
- are looking for a queer, diverse crowd
- like stage nights with drag or burlesque
- are out with a mixed group
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a men-only or bear bar
- are out before 7 pm
- are looking for a big club
