What makes Gugg special
Founded in 1979, HOSI Wien ran a volunteer-led basement venue on Novaragasse in the 2nd district for 30 years. In 2010 it moved to Heumühlgasse on the corner of Mühlgasse, right into the scene around the Naschmarkt. Gugg is named after Franz Xaver Gugg (1921–2003), a pioneer of the gay rights movement and long-time supporter of the association.
Gugg sees itself as a space with no obligation to buy: you can order cheap drinks and toasties, but you don’t have to. Every night has its own crowd. On Tuesdays QYVIE meets, the youth group for everyone under 29; Wednesday is LesBiFem night for lesbian and bi+ women and non-binary people; on Thursdays the BuntBar opens with community get-togethers, after-work specials and the occasional pub quiz. Once a month on a Thursday the 50+ group Prime Timers also meets here. On Fridays there is a regular bar night.
The rooms are fully wheelchair accessible, with an accessible toilet and large-print drinks menus. Salon Helga houses the Ruth Maier Library, open every third Tuesday of the month from 8 to 9:30 pm.
A good fit if you …
- are new to Vienna and want to connect with the community
- want to go out cheaply with no obligation to buy
- like get-togethers, pub quizzes or group nights
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a party bar open late into the night; Why Not or Marea Alta suit that better
- want to drop by spontaneously at the weekend without checking the calendar first
