What makes Belgica special
Rue du Marché au Charbon is Brussels’ queer street, and Le Belgica has been one of its best-known addresses since the mid-80s. The same operator has run the bar for over 20 years, and the simple pub interior with wooden tables and a long bar has remained largely unchanged.
Belgica is known for its house drink of the same name, served half-frozen, and for its selection of Belgian beers. There is no food. At weekends DJs play, and the bar becomes the pre-party spot for the whole street.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is international and colourfully mixed; many locals drop by after dinner or before the club. Local guides call Belgica a landmark of the Brussels scene, and Google reviews praise the atmosphere and music.
A good fit if you …
- want to start the evening at the Marché au Charbon
- want to combine Belgian beer and DJ music
- like an international crowd
Not ideal if you …
- are out on a Monday or Tuesday
- are looking for a men-only bar
- would like something to eat
