What makes Muriel’s special
Muriel’s is named after a former milliner who is said to have worked here, and the interior is suitably playful: damask curtains, velvet seats, dark walls, mirrors, chandeliers, an open fireplace and hat-themed memorabilia. The café bar is on Church Lane, a narrow lane between the city centre and the Cathedral Quarter.
Behind the bar are signature cocktails and a large selection of gins, plus dishes from around the world, breakfast classics and platters with cheese, meat or seafood.
Atmosphere and crowd
Muriel’s is not a gay bar as such but a queer-friendly café bar with a mixed, rather grown-up crowd over 30. The atmosphere, the drinks and the food get praise.
A good fit if you …
- like gin and cocktails in a special setting
- want to eat before going out
- want to have a quiet chat
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a classic gay bar with a scene crowd
- want to dance
