The Washington Square Hotel is a historic hotel right on Washington Square Park. The Stonewall Inn and Christopher Street are about five minutes’ walk away – it hardly gets more Village than this.

What makes the hotel special
Travel Gay lists the Washington Square Hotel in its New York guide as “Great value for money” with “Old School charm” in the West Village. It is not a queer hotel, but its location in the historic heart of the movement is unbeatable: Stonewall, Julius’ and the bars on Christopher Street are a few minutes’ walk away.
Rooms and amenities
The rooms are small, as is typical of old New York buildings, and some are a bit dated. There are free pastries and coffee, a coffee bar and luggage storage. Guests praise the staff and location; small rooms without a fridge and hot water that quickly runs short are criticised.
A good fit if you …
- want to experience the Village on foot
- like old-building charm
- want a short way back at night
Not ideal if you …
- need lots of space
- expect modern design
