What makes Pimpernel special
The rooms on the edge of the Glockenbachviertel were already used as a bar in the 1950s, and the name Pimpernel has been above the door since 1970. From the 1980s the venue was a well-known meeting place for the gay scene; Freddie Mercury is said to have been a regular here during his Munich years. Since a change of operator in the mid-2000s the crowd has become much more mixed.
The night
The party takes place in the narrow, dark club room, with local and occasionally international DJs on the decks. Pimpernel is more an after-hour than a pre-drinks bar: it usually only gets really full after midnight. Before regular club hours the venue can also be booked for private parties.
A good fit if you …
- want to keep dancing after the bar
- want to experience a piece of Munich scene history
- like electronic music until the morning
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for an exclusively gay place
- feel uncomfortable in cramped, full rooms
- want a quiet drink to talk
