What makes Porto da Barra stand out
Porto da Barra is in the Barra district on the west side of Salvador, where the Portuguese landed in the 16th century. The bay is sheltered, and the water is usually calm and clear, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The strip of sand is narrow, and at weekends and on public holidays everyone squeezes in together.
There is no clearly defined queer section; the community is spread across the whole beach. A few minutes’ walk away stands the Farol da Barra lighthouse, the starting point of the annual Pride parade.
Atmosphere and crowd
All of Salvador meets at Porto da Barra: families, locals, travellers and many queer guests. The mood is best in the late afternoon, when the sun sets over the bay and people on the beach applaud. Afterwards it’s on to the bars of Barra or further to Rio Vermelho.
A good fit if you …
- want to swim in the middle of the city
- are looking for calm water for swimming
- want to experience the sunset with a queer crowd
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for lots of space and quiet on the beach, as it’s crowded at weekends
- expect an exclusively gay beach section
