Salvador da Bahia

Salvador is the soul of Afro-Brazil, and its queer scene is as loud, colourful and rhythmic as the city itself. Drag has a long tradition here, and the Pride parade is one of the country’s great street festivals.

Rio Vermelho and Rua Carlos Gomes

The nightlife is split between two poles. In the bohemian district of Rio Vermelho you’ll find the big clubs SAN Boate and Amsterdam Red River, where people dance until morning at weekends. In the centre, Rua Carlos Gomes has been the traditional meeting place for decades: here Bar Âncora do Marujo and Carmén Lounge Bar put on drag shows on a big stage. By day people meet at Porto da Barra, especially in the late afternoon.

When to go?

  • February – Carnival: Salvador’s street carnival is one of the largest in the world and a highlight for the community too (check dates with the organiser).

Our favourites

  • Bar Âncora do Marujo – a drag institution since 2000
  • SAN Boate – the big weekend party in Rio Vermelho

Practical tips

  • Bahia is considered one of Brazil’s most dangerous states for LGBT+ people: stay discreet outside scene venues and use taxis or ride-hailing apps at night.
  • Cruising areas such as Farol da Barra are isolated and risky at night – best avoided.
  • For drag shows, bring small notes for admission and tips.
