What makes Contramano stand out
Contramano opened in the 1980s, shortly after the return to democracy, and is often named as the city’s oldest gay hangout still operating. The bar is in Recoleta, in the part many porteños call Barrio Norte.
The music is danceable pop and Latin hits, often with 80s classics. Guests describe the drinks as strong and affordable. There are regular theme nights for bears, with Bear and Admirers Night on Sundays.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mainly bears, men from their mid-thirties and older gentlemen plus their admirers, many of them long-time regulars. Guests praise the helpful service and the warm atmosphere. One visitor who came alone quickly made friends and danced all night.

- like mature men or bears
- are out alone and looking to connect
- want to dance to pop and 80s hits
Not ideal if you …
