What makes Hercules stand out

Hercules is in the Makkaratalo, the commercial building with the Citycenter shopping centre by the central station, near Stockmann and the Esplanadi. Since the legendary DTM closed, it’s Helsinki’s biggest queer dance venue. Across three floors there are two bars and two dance floors, plus a covered rooftop terrace.

Musically, Hercules is all about singing along: early in the evening there’s karaoke, later it’s Eurodance, Eurovision classics, 90s hits and Finnish Schlager. Until 10 pm it’s a relaxed spot for a cheap beer on the terrace, and there’s also a happy hour.

Atmosphere and crowd

The crowd is mixed: mostly gay men of different ages, plus lesbians, queer groups of friends and tourists. At weekends it gets really busy from 11 pm. The terrace, the cheap early-evening prices and the friendly bar staff get praise.
