Helsinki

Helsinki is small, cool and surprisingly queer – amid design shops, saunas and the Baltic Sea. Since the legendary club DTM had to close in 2025, the scene has been spread across charming bars in the centre and in Kallio.

The centre and Kallio

In the centre you can dance to Eurodance and schlager at Hercules, sing at the karaoke classic Mann’s Street or party at the colourful Street Pride Bar in Kamppi. In the working-class district of Kallio, the tiny Fairytale bar and the queer-run cocktail bar Struts await. Distances are short, and it’s rather quiet during the week – at weekends the party goes on into the early hours.

When to go?

  • June – Helsinki Pride: Pride week from 22 to 28 June 2026, with the parade and park festival in Kaivopuisto on Saturday 27 June.
  • June to August – midsummer and white nights: Almost no darkness, packed terraces and swimming in the Baltic.

Practical tips

  • Club DTM closed for good in June 2025 after its operating company went bankrupt – older guidebooks still list it.
  • Be sure to try one of the city’s public saunas: in Finland sauna is part of everyday culture, not a cruising spot.
  • Alcohol is expensive; happy hours are worth it.
