What makes Caneca de Prata stand out
Caneca de Prata, “silver tankard” in English, is on Avenida Vieira de Carvalho in the historic centre and is considered the oldest LGBT bar still operating in the city. It has been welcoming the community here for generations. The bar is simple and down-to-earth, with a mezzanine and, according to guests, a darkroom.
It serves draught beer, gin and tonic and caipirinhas, which guests particularly praise. There are no shows or parties: the Caneca is a classic pub, good for a drink in the early evening before moving on to the clubs.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mainly older gay men, many of whom have been drinking their beer here for decades. Guests praise the very good service and the loyal regulars; one visitor says the mezzanine could tell many stories. Together with Soda Pop, the Caneca makes Vieira de Carvalho a place full of scene history.
A good fit if you …
- like bars with history
- want to meet more mature men
- are looking for a good caipirinha
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for shows or a dance floor
- are looking for a young crowd
