What makes Charlie’s special

Charlie’s is on Colfax Avenue, the lifeline of gay Capitol Hill. Since 1981 it has been the city’s country-western address, with a disco ball shaped like a cowboy boot that you have to see. There are sister bars in Phoenix, Chicago and Puerto Vallarta.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays there are free line-dance lessons, plus karaoke on Monday, bingo on Tuesday and drag on Sunday, and on some Saturdays drag brunch too. After midnight the sound switches from country to pop and dance, and by then at the latest cowboys stand next to club kids at the bar.

Atmosphere and crowd

It’s busiest at the weekend, when half of Capitol Hill warms up here or simply stays. The crowd is very mixed: bears, bikers, drag queens and country fans.
