What makes Funny Girls special
Funny Girls is less a classic gay bar than a show institution. Founded in 1994 by Basil Newby, the cabaret later moved into the former Odeon cinema on Dickson Road, a listed Art Deco building opened in 1939. You sit at tables rather than in rows, and on stage there are dance numbers, elaborate costumes and bawdy adult humour.
In May 2026 Kane Oliver took over the venue. Since then there has been a bigger stage with a catwalk, a modernised show and improvements in the restaurant. Beforehand you can eat at the in-house Art Deco restaurant Garbo’s.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mixed and in party mood; groups and hen parties are part of Blackpool. If you are looking for an intimate scene bar, the Flying Handbag is a better choice. If you want a loud, well-produced drag revue, this is the place.
A good fit if you …
- want to see a professionally produced drag show
- are planning an evening of dinner and a show with a group
- like Art Deco architecture
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a bar to meet people
- are in Blackpool on a Monday or Tuesday, when there is no show
