What makes the museum special
The museum is half a block from the intersection of Castro and 18th Street. The main gallery hosts the permanent exhibition “Queer Past Becomes Present”, while topics change in the front gallery. Exhibits include parts of the original rainbow flag and items relating to Harvey Milk and José Julio Sarria.
For the permanent exhibition there is a 35-minute audio guide via the CloudGuide app for $1.99. On the first Wednesday of the month entry is free, and these tickets cannot be reserved online. The Historical Society’s archive is on Market Street and accessible by appointment only.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mixed, and many are travellers on a Castro walk. Visitors praise the exhibits, the emotional impact and the well-explained turning points in history.
A good fit if you …
- like queer history
- are planning a Castro walk with background
- only have an hour
Not ideal if you …
- are in the Castro on a Monday
- are looking for a big museum for a whole day
