What makes Golden Bear special
The hotel is on Kerkstraat, a quiet parallel street between Leidseplein and Reguliersdwarsstraat, in two 18th-century buildings. Bars and clubs are right around the corner, and museums, canals and the Nine Streets are within walking distance.
The rooms are rather small and simple, with TV, desk and kettle; the cheapest single room shares a bathroom. As in many old Amsterdam buildings there is no lift, but there are steep stairs. Payment is by card, and a €100 deposit is blocked on your credit card on arrival.
Atmosphere and crowd
The hotel has been an address for gay travellers for decades but is now open to all guests. Many particularly appreciate the location in the middle of the queer nightlife district.
A good fit if you …
- want to stay centrally and comparatively cheaply
- want to walk to Reguliersdwarsstraat in the evening
- like a piece of Amsterdam’s gay history
Not ideal if you …
- have heavy luggage or struggle with stairs
- need a lot of space in your room
- want to pay in cash
