What makes Hessenhuis special
Café Hessenhuis is on the ground floor of the 16th-century warehouse of the same name, north of the Old Town in the Schipperskwartier. Since 1993, the lofty room with its vaulted ceiling and long bar has been a meeting point for Antwerp’s LGBTQ community and their friends.
During the week it’s a relaxed bar; on Fridays and Saturdays DJs play, the dance floor fills up and it goes on until 4 am. For an Antwerp bar, beer prices are moderate, and there is a terrace and small dishes.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd mixes gay men, lesbians and friends, many between their late 20s and 50. During the week regulars dominate; at weekends many come to dance.
A good fit if you …
- want to dance at the weekend
- are looking for a bar and party in one place
- like a mixed queer crowd
Not ideal if you …
- are out on a Monday
- want a small, quiet pub
