What makes Hula’s special
Hula’s is on the second floor of the Waikiki Grand Hotel, opposite Queen’s Surf Beach, Waikiki’s gay beach section. The open terrace offers views of Diamond Head and the Pacific. Since 1974 the bar has been a community meeting point and is one of the longest-running LGBTQ bars in the world.
During the day Hula’s is a relaxed bar with a long happy hour; on several evenings there is live music from 6 to 9 pm, after which video DJs play for dancing. Mondays are open mic, and anyone who performs gets a drink on the house. During Honolulu Pride the official after-party takes place here.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is a mix of locals and holidaymakers, relaxed and sociable. Many come straight from the beach for a sundowner, and the mai tai is mentioned particularly often in reviews. It is at its best at sunset.
A good fit if you …
- want a sundowner with an ocean view after the beach
- like live music
- want to meet locals and travellers
Not ideal if you …
- are under 21
- are looking for a big club
