What makes Jeffery Pub special
The pub started as an ordinary bar and became a queer meeting place when patrons of the closed Maxine’s moved here. Today owner Jamal Junior DJs himself at weekends, plus there is drag and karaoke. Since 2024 there has been a Progress Pride crosswalk outside the door. Reviews praise the music and the Sunday atmosphere; drink prices and cover charges are sometimes criticised.
A good fit if you …
- want to get to know Black queer nightlife on the South Side
- want to dance late, Sundays included
- like hip-hop, R&B and house
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a quiet drink early in the evening
