Chicago has one of the largest and most diverse scenes in North America – with Northalsted as the oldest officially recognised gay neighbourhood in the USA. Alongside show-tune bars and drag stages, the city offers leather bars, lesbian bars and its legendary house club culture.
Northalsted, Andersonville & Uptown
The centre is on Halsted Street, where Sidetrack and Roscoe’s face each other directly. Further north in the Lakeview area, Smartbar hosts house nights on Sundays with “Queen!”, while Big Chicks and the Baton Show Lounge in Uptown stand for neighbourhood feel and drag tradition. Andersonville has one of the best cocktail bars in the city in Nobody’s Darling, and leather fans head to Rogers Park for Touché. The neighbourhoods are well connected by the elevated railway (Red Line).

Practical tips
- Many bars close at 2am (3am on Saturdays), some licences allow 4am or 5am – for long nights, plan in Touché, Charlie’s or Smartbar.
- Some cult bars such as Big Chicks only take cash – have some on you.
- Chicago gets bitterly cold in winter; the rooftops and terraces are then closed and the scene moves indoors.
