What makes Mudan stand out
Behind the historic Red House in Ximending lies an open-air bar strip, one of the largest concentrations of open-air gay bars in Asia. In the evening dozens of tables stand outside, and the bars blend into one another. Mudan, meaning peony, has one of the biggest terraces on the strip.
It’s known for fruity smoothie cocktails and hearty fried snacks that go well with people-watching. DJs play at weekends.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mixed and relaxed: groups of friends, couples, locals and travellers. The terrace fills up early in the evening, especially at weekends. Taiwan is considered one of the most queer-friendly countries in Asia, and the mood at the Red House reflects that.
A good fit if you …
- want to start the evening early
- would like to sit outside and people-watch
- are out with a mixed group
Not ideal if you …
- want to dance
- would like to sit quietly indoors
