What makes the beach stand out
The beach lies below the El Mirador viewpoint with the colourful CANCÚN sign. Unlike in front of the big hotels, nothing is built up here. There are free palapas for shade, toilets and showers. There are no restaurants or beach bars, so it’s best to bring drinks.
The beach faces the open sea, the waves are often strong, and it’s also popular with surfers. Lifeguards are on duty from 9 am to 5 pm and indicate conditions with green, yellow and red flags. From around April to October, sargassum seaweed can wash ashore.
Atmosphere and crowd
Playa Delfines isn’t an exclusively gay beach. At weekends many families come from the city, and people queue at the sign for photos. A queer group gathers at the southern end on most weekends.
A good fit if you …
- are looking for a beach day away from the resort beaches
- like surf and wide views
- are getting around by bus or rental car
Not ideal if you …
- need calm water for swimming
- want sunbeds, a bar and service
