Cancún

Cancún is first and foremost a Caribbean resort, and you have to look for the gay scene in Downtown. If you do, you will find a small, very lively nightlife along Avenida Tulum with plenty of drag.

Downtown on Avenida Tulum

The main venues are in the city centre, a good nine kilometres from the big hotel blocks. The 11:11 Club has been a fixture for more than a decade, and the Laser Hot Bar, within walking distance, puts on the big drag shows. Closer to the tourists is The BackDoor in Plaza Las Palmas, known for its Sunday drag brunch. During the day, people meet at Playa Delfines. If you want more, go an hour to Playa del Carmen, where the scene is bigger.

When to go?

• May/June – Cancún Pride: the parade runs from the Malecón Tajamar along Avenida Tulum into the centre (check the date with the organisers).
• Early February – Arena Festival: the three-day circuit festival takes place in Playa del Carmen, an hour away by bus, and also brings many gay visitors to Cancún (check the date with the organisers).

Practical tips

• The bars are in Downtown, not in the Hotel Zone. Plan for a taxi or Uber, and agree the fare in advance with regular taxis.
• Carry pesos in cash, as entry is often paid in cash.
