What makes The Flaming Galah special
Fremantle, Freo for short, Walyalup in Noongar, is the port city south-west of Perth. In Essex Street, right in the centre, is the Flaming Galah, a small queer-run bar. The rules are right on the website: no room for homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism or body shaming, and pronouns and consent are respected.
Besides the cocktail menu there is bar food with lots of vegetarian and vegan options, such as burgers from 24 AUD, loaded tots and late-night ramen. Art hangs on the walls, and at weekends the bar opens at lunchtime.
Atmosphere and crowd
The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and unpretentious. The bar is a meeting place for queer Freo locals, plus visitors from Perth. Burlesque nights and karaoke get busier and louder.
The crowd is deliberately diverse; community counts for more than dress code here. With 4.7 stars on Google, the Flaming Galah is one of the best-rated bars in town.
A good fit if you …
- are visiting Fremantle and looking for a relaxed, inclusive bar
- love singing karaoke on Sundays
- like cocktails and bar food with vegan options
Not ideal if you …
- are out on a Monday or Tuesday
- are looking for a men’s bar to flirt
- want to keep partying after midnight
