What makes The George special
The George recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, making it one of Ireland’s oldest queer institutions. The bar is on South Great George’s Street, a few minutes from Temple Bar and Grafton Street. There are two dance floors, a back yard used as a party area and, in Bridie’s Bar, a quieter sister bar.
The programme runs seven days a week, with drag, competitions, live music and DJs. Sunday bingo with Shirley Temple Bar is legendary, and on Mondays there is the drag game show Win, Lose or Drag.
Atmosphere and crowd
In the late afternoon The George is a quiet bar; after 10 pm it turns into a club. The crowd is mixed, mostly men, many regulars including over-40s, and at weekends lots of groups of friends. Reviews heap praise on the drag artists, the music and the drink prices.
A good fit if you …
- like drag shows and big parties
- want to dance until 3 am
- want to experience Ireland’s best-known gay bar
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a quiet pub – Pennylane is the place for that
- are looking for a men-only bar
