What makes the Wildrose special
The Wildrose was founded by a collective of five women and opened on New Year’s Eve 1984. For over two decades Martha Manning and the late Shelley Brothers ran the bar together. It’s Seattle’s only lesbian bar and one of only around three dozen left in the USA.
The bar on Pike Street on Capitol Hill is a meeting place, living room and party venue in one, and was recently refreshed with new lighting and programming. During the week there’s karaoke, trivia, drag bingo, speed dating and nights for queer women songwriters, and on Fridays and Saturdays DJs play from 9 pm. For Pride at the end of June there’s a big outdoor party.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is lesbian, queer, trans and non-binary, and friends are welcome. Guests describe the atmosphere as safe and warm, and the drinks as strong and fairly priced. At the weekend it’s often full early in the evening.
A good fit if you …
- are looking for a lesbian and queer space
- want to dance at the weekend
- want to experience a piece of scene history
Not ideal if you …
- want to go out on a Monday
- are looking for a bar mainly for gay men
