What makes Bar 22 stand out
Bar 22 is on the ground floor of the strikingly colourful building at Laugavegur 22, Reykjavík’s main shopping and nightlife street. Upstairs in the same building the scene parties at Kíkí; downstairs things are more laid-back. The bar is queer-run, and alongside regular bar nights there are quiz nights and Dyke Nite.
During the day Bar 22 is almost a café, with cappuccino, cake and lounge music. Its biggest draw is the long happy hour, mentioned in many Google reviews. On tap are Icelandic beers such as Viking, plus a few unusual styles like sour beers, and good cocktails.
Atmosphere and crowd
Guide to Iceland describes the bar as a relaxed, queer-friendly place with a mixed crowd and a warm atmosphere. Alongside queer locals, lots of tourists come. Guests praise the cosy atmosphere, the music and the staff. It’s best in the early evening.
A good fit if you …
- want a beer in queer company in Reykjavík
- want to make the most of happy hour
- want a relaxed pre-club drink
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a men-only bar
- expect a big club
