What makes Café Weiß special
The story of Café Weiß begins in 1953: at the time Alois Weiß ran a tailor’s shop on Obere Bachstraße, in whose back rooms gay men danced to music at weekends, a small sensation for the time. In 1961 he opened Café Weiß in the Kulmbacher Bierstuben on Geißstraße. Later his son Heinz Weiß took over, and since 2013 Harry Lisson has run the pub, supported by Eberhard Weiß.
Little has changed inside for decades, and that’s exactly what guests appreciate: original furnishings, a jukebox and house schnapps, plus draught beer from Kulmbach and Andechs. The atmosphere is familiar, and many describe Weiß as their living room. The crowd is very mixed, queer and straight, young and old. Late at night it gets fuller when the bars around the Hans-im-Glück fountain close.
Rubens is directly opposite, and reBOOTS and Jakobstube are a few minutes’ walk away.
A good fit if you …
- are looking for a real traditional pub with history
- want draught beer at fair prices
- are still out after midnight
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for an exclusively gay bar
- want to go out on a Sunday, it’s closed then
- are looking for a cocktail bar
