What makes Connies special

Denis Marshall and Walter Furlong opened Connections in December 1975 in a building that had previously been a cabaret bar and an illegal gambling den. For the first 14 years cameras were banned, as homosexuality was a crime in Western Australia until 1990. Since 1991 the club has been owned by Tim Brown. The City of Perth has added the building to its heritage register because of its significance for the LGBTQIA+ community.

After a renovation with an extension to the rear, the club has a large dance floor with mirrored walls, marble and one of the most elaborate lighting systems in the city. Above it is an open-air roof terrace. DJs play electro, disco and house, plus drag shows with the resident queens.

Atmosphere and crowd

Connies is where queer nights in Perth end. It is busiest on Fridays and Saturdays after midnight, when the party goes on until 5 am. Many drop by after a drink at The Court.

The crowd is mostly young and up for a party; the mix of drag fans, club kids, bears and groups of friends is the appeal. If you are looking for a men’s bar to flirt, you will find more of a loud club night here.
