What makes the beach at Farme de Amoedo stand out
The stretch between lifeguard towers Posto 8 and Posto 9 has been the meeting point of Rio’s queer community for decades. The beach stalls hang rainbow flags, so the spot is easy to find. It’s not just about sunbathing here, but about seeing and being seen: sungas, caipirinhas, volleyball and lots of toned Cariocas.
Each beach stall has its own regular crowd. The Barraca da Denise at Posto 9 (number 63) is a well-known meeting point, and stalls 64, 65 and 106 are also mentioned. There you hire a sunbed and umbrella and order drinks right at your spot.
Atmosphere and crowd
At weekends and on public holidays the sand is packed from midday, and it’s liveliest in the afternoon. Locals and travellers mix, and couples are openly affectionate. Visitors praise the relaxed, playful mood and the feeling of visibility.
A good fit if you …
- want to experience Rio on the beach and meet people
- want to go straight from the beach to the bars on Farme de Amoedo
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a quiet, empty beach
- can’t relate to body culture
