Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s most sensual stage – with a rainbow flag on Ipanema beach and parties until sunrise. The scene lives outdoors: on the beach, on the street and at Carnival.
Ipanema, Copacabana & Gamboa
The heart of the scene is the stretch of beach at Farme de Amoedo in Ipanema, from where you move on to Galeria Café in the evening. In Copacabana, history and the present come together: La Cueva, founded in 1964, the young Pink Flamingo and the Rainbow Kiosk right on the promenade. If you’re looking for the big club night, head to the port district of Gamboa for The Home.
When to go?
- February/March – Carnival: Street blocos, costumes and parties around the clock; the whole city celebrates, queers included.
- November – Parada do Orgulho LGBTI+: The parade moves along Avenida Atlântica in Copacabana; in 2025 the 30th edition took place on 23 November (check dates with the organiser).
Our favourites
- Ipanema Beach at Farme de Amoedo – Rio in its purest form, with applause at sunset
- La Cueva – a piece of the city’s queer history since 1964

Practical tips
- Only take the bare essentials to the beach: phones and wallets are frequently stolen on the beaches and the promenade, and phones are even snatched out of people’s hands in passing.
- Be careful with dating apps: there are repeated cases in which dates end in robbery or spiked drinks (“Boa noite Cinderela”). Have the first meeting in a public place, never leave drinks unattended, and don’t take a stranger back to your hotel without letting reception know.
- At night it’s better to use a ride-hailing app than to walk, especially in Gamboa and on the way back to Copacabana or Ipanema.
