What makes the Schwules Museum special
Founded in 1985 by three gay students, the Schwules Museum today shows not just gay but queer history in all its breadth, with current focuses for example on lesbians and queer life in the countryside. Since 2013 it has been on Lützowstraße. In autumn 2026 the exhibitions are “Lieber glücklich als normal! Queere Erfahrungen in christlich-fundamentalistischen Kontexten” and “Susan Sontag, Sehen und gesehen werden” (both until 2 November) and “Cruising the Countryside, Queeres Leben auf dem Land” (until 30 November). The archive and library are open without registration on Mon and Wed–Fri from 2 to 6 pm.
Visitors praise the thoughtful curation and variety of perspectives, and most texts are also in English. Criticism mainly concerns the modest size of the exhibitions and some German-only labels. Step-free access is via the courtyard, and the exhibitions, café and library can be reached by ramp or lift; there are videos in German Sign Language and hearing aids on request.
