What makes the Brass Key special
The Brass Key is spread over nine historic houses on Bradford Street, a parallel street above Commercial Street. The rooms are arranged around gardens and courtyards, with an infinity pool and a hot tub in the middle. Some rooms have their own terrace or Jacuzzi tub. Breakfast is included, and in the early evening there is wine and cheese for guests.
The guesthouse also has the Shipwreck Lounge, a small bar with a fireplace, wood panelling and a courtyard with a fire pit. The focus is on craft cocktails and martinis. The lounge is also open to people not staying at the guesthouse. Minimum stays apply on holidays and event weeks; it is best to ask directly for details.
Atmosphere and crowd
The guesthouse is gay-run and welcomes everyone; guests must be 21+. It is quiet and more suited to couples and connoisseurs than to party-goers. In the lounge the crowd is mostly male and rather mature. On Tripadvisor and Expedia, guests praise the location, the well-kept grounds with the pool, the breakfast and the friendly staff. Criticism concerns value for money, small rooms and weak water pressure. Some long-standing guests feel the guesthouse has lost some character since the change of ownership.
A good fit if you …
- want to stay somewhere stylish and quiet
- prefer a pool and garden to party bustle
- like a good cocktail in the evening
Not ideal if you …
- want to stay cheaply
- are looking for a party hotel
- are under 21
