At the tip of Cape Cod lies what is probably America’s gayest little town – and in summer it’s bursting at the seams. Between May and October Provincetown becomes the stage for tea dances, drag shows and themed weeks, while in winter it gets very quiet.
Around Commercial Street
Almost everything happens on foot on or near Commercial Street. The day culminates in the afternoon with the tea dance at the Boatslip, after which you move on to the historic A-House or to the nightlife complex Crown & Anchor with its cabaret, club and bear bar. Things are a little calmer on the Porch Bar at the Gifford House, and if you want to stay in style, you’ll end up at the Brass Key with its Shipwreck Lounge. Many bars and guesthouses are seasonal, so check opening hours outside the summer.
When to go?
- August – Provincetown Carnival: A week of costumes, parties and the big parade along Commercial Street; in 2026 Carnival ran from 15 to 22 August under the theme “Deep Sea Disco”.
- October/November – Spooky Bear: The bear community’s Halloween weekend with tea dances at the Boatslip, from 29 October to 1 November in 2026.
Our favourites
- Boatslip Tea Dance – the quintessential Provincetown ritual, with harbour views at sunset
- A-House – a bar from 1798 where Tennessee Williams once sat

Practical tips
- Accommodation for July, August and the themed weeks (Pride in early June, Bear Week in July, Carnival in August) is often booked up months in advance and has minimum stays.
- It’s worth arriving without a car: in summer fast ferries run from Boston, and everything in town is easily reached on foot.
- Out of season (roughly November to April) many bars and guesthouses are closed – the A-House is one of the few year-round venues.
