What makes Grosse Freiheit 114 special
The bar is in two parts: at the front are the bar and a few tables, while at the back it is more casual, with a small dance floor including a step and DJ booth. Dark walls, red and purple lamps, garlands of gold coins and a few tongue-in-cheek sculptures give the room its own character between elegance and queer safe space.
The crowd is younger, most are between 25 and 40, and around 80 per cent are men. It is less international than in Kreuzberg or Neukölln, and the mood is flirty.
At weekends a DJ usually plays from 8 or 10 pm, and on Saturdays there is already a party atmosphere around 9 to 10 pm. This mix of bar and club is rare in Berlin.
A good fit if you …
- want to dance without going straight to a club
- are between 25 and 40 or like that crowd
- are looking for a flirty atmosphere
- are out and about in Friedrichshain
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a quiet bar to talk
- are looking for a 50+ crowd
- are looking for a very international crowd – you’ll find that more in Kreuzberg
