What makes JR’s special

JR’s has been on Pacific Street in Montrose since 1982 and has survived the AIDS crisis, gentrification and the pandemic. Readers have voted it Houston’s best gay bar several times.

Inside it’s relaxed with a video bar, plus a courtyard, go-go dancers, drag and karaoke. Happy hour is considered generous.

Atmosphere and crowd

Mostly men, lots of regulars from Montrose, ages from mid-20s to mid-50s. At the weekend the courtyard is full by the afternoon, and in the evening many move on to neighbouring South Beach.
