In Montrose, Houston has one of the most long-established gayborhoods in the southern US. The largest city in Texas offers an astonishingly broad scene, from leather bars to country dance halls.
Montrose
In the Montrose neighbourhood, JR’s Bar & Grill and the club South Beach Houston on Pacific Street form the centre, and a few steps further on is the leather bar RIPCORD. On Tuam Street, the legendary Rich’s Houston has reinvented itself as a pool lounge. Women meet at Pearl Bar on Washington Avenue, and if you want to dance the two-step, head north to Neon Boots Dancehall & Saloon. Things usually get going around 10–11pm, and closing time is 2am.
When to go?
- June – Pride Houston: Houston normally celebrates in June with a parade and festival downtown; in 2026 the parade was postponed to August due to severe weather (check dates with the organiser).
- All year – Sunday drag brunch at Rich’s: One of the city’s most popular weekend fixtures – be sure to book ahead.
Our favourites
- Neon Boots Dancehall & Saloon – queer two-step of a kind you’ll only find in Texas.
- Pearl Bar – a warm-hearted lesbian bar with crawfish and karaoke.

Practical tips
- The legal situation in Texas: Same-sex marriage applies nationwide, but Texas is politically very conservative. Since a federal appeals court ruling in November 2025, law SB 12, which criminalises “sexually oriented” performances in front of minors, may be enforced – in adult bars drag remains part of everyday life, but organisers have become more cautious at events with a mixed audience.
- Houston is huge and car-oriented: in Montrose you can walk between the bars, but for Pearl Bar and Neon Boots you’ll need an Uber or Lyft.
- Most Montrose bars have happy hour from 4pm to 8pm; it only gets really busy from around 10pm.
