What makes Neues Ufer special
The café opened in the 1970s as Anderes Ufer and is considered one of the first places in Berlin where gays and lesbians met completely openly. David Bowie lived next door at Hauptstraße 155 from 1976 to 1978 and was a regular. Photos on the walls recall this era, and Bowie fans from all over the world still drop by today.
Today Neues Ufer is a small, cosy café with a bar where things are calm. The crowd is mixed and rather older, people come to chat, not to party.
The café is in Schöneberg on Hauptstraße, a little south of the rainbow neighbourhood around Nollendorfplatz. Motzstraße is just a few minutes away by U-Bahn.
A good fit if you …
- are interested in queer history and David Bowie
- are looking for a quiet place to talk
- like a mixed crowd
Not ideal if you …
- are looking for a party or dance floor
- want to go out on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, it’s closed then
- want to flirt, the Nollendorf neighbourhood is the better choice for that
