Tía María's Liquor Store
Gay bar · San Juan Santurce

What makes Tía María’s stand out
Tía María’s is a neighbourhood bar in Santurce and an institution of the scene, with no stage and no dance floor. Drinks are cheap and generously poured; a local Medalla beer costs around 2 dollars. There are two pool tables, and karaoke nights draw lots of regulars.
The bar works just as well for an afternoon happy hour as for a few drinks late in the evening.
Atmosphere and crowd
The crowd is mixed, down-to-earth and mainly local: older gay men, lesbians, drag queens and students, plus some travellers. Women are explicitly welcome. Reviews praise the strong drinks, the friendly atmosphere and the diverse crowd.
A good fit if you …
- want to get to know San Juan beyond the tourist bars
- like playing pool or singing karaoke
- want to drink cheaply and in a relaxed setting
Not ideal if you …
- want to dance or see shows
- are looking for a young party crowd
